What Is a Seed Phrase and Why You Must Never Share It

A seed phrase is 12 or 24 ordinary words that form the complete backup key to your crypto wallet. Whoever knows those words has full control of the wallet and everything in it.

What it does

When you create a wallet, it generates a random set of words. From that set, all your addresses and private keys are derived mathematically. The only way to restore your wallet on a new device or after losing your phone is with those words. There is no other way.

Why you must never share it

Anyone who gets your seed phrase has instant access to all your funds. There is no technical protection: the seed phrase is the wallet. A password does nothing here. Once funds are taken this way, they cannot be recovered. Blockchain transactions are final.

Common theft tactics

A support agent asks for the phrase to "restore" your wallet. A website offers to "check" your wallet if you enter the words. Someone in a chat says they will help with your problem as soon as you type the phrase. No legitimate service ever asks for your seed phrase. Ever.

How to store it correctly

Write it on paper, not in your phone's notes or a cloud app. Keep copies in more than one physically separate place. Do not photograph your screen when it shows the phrase. Do not say the words aloud. Do not enter them on someone else's device.
