How to Exchange Crypto with the Lowest Fees

How to reduce fees when swapping crypto: which networks cost less, when an exchange service beats a centralized platform, and what actually affects the final amount you receive.

How to Exchange Crypto with the Lowest Fees

Two things determine how much you receive from a swap: the rate and network fees. The rate is close to market rate almost everywhere. Network fees, on the other hand, can vary a lot depending on your choices.

Which networks are cheaper

The most common fee overhead is sending USDT on Ethereum (ERC20). Gas fees there depend on network demand and can be noticeable on busy days. Tron (TRC20) costs cents. Solana is also cheaper than Ethereum.

For stablecoins the rule is simple: if you do not specifically need ERC20, use TRC20. The transfer cost difference is significant; the exchange rate is the same either way.

When a centralized exchange costs more

Using a centralized exchange means registration, verification, and a withdrawal fee on top of the network fee. For a one-off swap, the chain of depositing, swapping, and withdrawing eats more than a direct swap through an exchange service.

This is most visible on smaller amounts. When the withdrawal fee is fixed, it takes a noticeable bite out of a small swap.

Fixed rate vs. floating rate

With a fixed rate, the service takes a small premium in exchange for locking the price. With a floating rate, the final amount depends on when the trade executes. For fast networks the difference is small: by the time Solana or Tron confirms a transaction, the market has barely moved.

For Bitcoin, with its longer confirmation times, a fixed rate is the calmer option.

What actually costs you money

A slow network and high gas. Transferring ERC20 tokens at peak demand is the main source of friction on smaller amounts. If you are planning a swap in advance, avoid the highest-traffic periods, which tend to coincide with volatile market days.
