Ether: swap limits, timing and where it goes

Ether is both the asset and the fuel, which is the one thing to plan around when swapping it. Sending your entire balance is impossible, because the transfer itself has to be paid for out of that balance, and the amount it costs is set by the network at the moment you send rather than known in advance.

Where Ethereum goes, and from how little

The minimum for each destination, in the unit you are sending. Read live, because it moves with the price and a figure written down goes stale quickly.

Leave enough to move what is left

A wallet emptied to the last unit is a wallet that cannot send again. If you plan to swap most of a balance, keep a margin for the next transaction rather than the exact fee for this one, because the next one will be priced by the network then, not now.

ETH on a rollup is a different entry in the table

The same ether held on Arbitrum or Optimism is reached by a different route with its own floor, so the numbers on this page are for Ethereum itself. Sending from a rollup means reading that network’s row rather than this one.
